Oscar Worthy?

Oscars were the theme for a mystery dinner theater that my husband and I went to last month with some friends. I found a template for Oscar on the Internet and went with it. I saw a lot of version to make one but decided to go with this one. I cut out 2 from gold glitter paper and backed them with black paper so that it looked like a shadow. Then, I put it on a "stage" with our friends names. I was worried it wasn't going to come out very good but I was pleasantly surprised! Not bad for only having 48 ho... read more »

Errores de Oscar

Cada año losPremios de la Academia de cine americano, los coloquialmente conocidos como Óscar, reconocen el trabajo de unos pocos privilegiados cuyas películas se revalorizan consiguiendo más público y por consiguiente más recaudación. Thelma Ritter

Oh, boy, how I've been looking forward to writing about Thelma Ritter! You know how there's always that one actor you see over and over again in movies and/or TV that you like, but can never remember their name? This was more of a thing in the pre-Internet days, when information about a given movie or star was not always at one's fingertips. Anyway, Thelma was the embodiment of this trope for me back in my video store days. I'd see her in something - always as a supporting character, never as a lead - an... read more »

HEY YOUGUYYYYYYYYSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!I wanna talk about Rita Moreno. SCHWING!I don't think I made it clear just how big a thrill it was to see her in person at the United Palace last year. I've always liked her and respected her, but hearing her speak about her career and her life with so much humor and candor was wonderful - and she still looks like a million bucks! As you may have guessed, when I think of her, I often think ofThe Electric Company. For you young'uns in the audience, this was an educationa... read more »

Announcement: 31 Days of Oscar Blogathon 2015

Sunrise (1927)

Sunrise: A Song of Two Humansseen on TV @ TCM11.17.14I first saw Sunrise in my college film history class way back when. I don't recall what my reaction was. It was without a doubt one of the very first times I had seen a silent movie, for what it's worth. As a movie, it's good, if somewhat melodramatic (to say the least). I like how it's almost entirely reliant on the visuals. There are few title cards, and the ones it has are used in unusual ways. There is, of course, the way the line "Couldn't she get... read more »

Belle of the Ball

Lupita Nyong'o in this delicious Prada number. Not only do I love this dress because it's in my favourite colour but also because it's just perfection! So who was your favourite belle of the ball at this year's Academy Awards? I have to be honest and say I've got more than one belle of the ball but in general I did think it was a little disappointing! Links and a remembrance

Wow, what a weekend, huh?The first time I recall really noticing Philip Seymour Hoffman was in Happiness, a mind-blowing movie that shows ordinary, everyday people at their most depraved. This was during the period when I was beginning to get a taste for independent cinema, so you can imagine how disturbing it was to see a character like Hoffman's on screen for the first time. I had studied acting in college for a semester, and I had taken classes outside school as well. I thought I was on my way to full... read more »

2013 Top 10

I was gonna begin by saying that I think we can all agree that 2013 was an incredible year for movies, but I've recently seen a few people who think otherwise. However, I have reason to believe that these are people who simply don't go to new movies much, if at all, anymore. If that's true, that would be a shame, because there was a lotta good stuff to see this year. As usual, I didn't get to see everything, so this list, like all my Top 10 lists, is far from definitive. Make of that what you will. 10. ... read more »

Dallas Buyers Club

Dallas Buyers Club (yet another movie title missing the 'the') was alright as Oscar bait biopics go, but honestly, it was that very baity-ness that left me bored with it in the end. It didn't surprise me much - partially because I had already seen the trailer a dozen times, but also because it was so by-the-numbers. It followed all the expected beats of an Oscar bait film: lone protagonist fighting the System, plucky sidekick whom he must learn from even as the sidekick learns from him, tragic death, red... read more »

Gravitational links

October is sure to be an exciting month. Lot of potential Oscar-caliber movies will unfurl for the people, and while some may think the race is already over thanks to Twelve Years a Slave, well, all I can say to that is a lot of people thought the race was over with The Social Network a couple of years ago, and look what happened. I may not be any kind of Oscar prognosticator, but I know this much: the Academy will pick what it likes regardless of what the media or the public or anybody else says they sh... read more »

Caged

Cagedseen on TV @ TCM6.10.13The only reason I wanted to see Caged was so I could fill a nagging gap in my personal film knowledge. The 1950 Best Actress Oscar race was an epic one. You had a silent film legend, Gloria Swanson, up for Sunset Boulevard, in a show-stopping, bravura performance that would be forever immortalized in film history (and also my all-time favorite film). Then you had Bette Davis in an equally larger-than-life performance in All About Eve - but it's eclipsed somewhat by Anne Baxter ... read more »

News and links

The most important news - for me, at least - is that the Queens World Film Festival returns next week, and once again I'll be there to cover it. It's a long one this year, March 5-10, but I'll do my best to cover as much of it as I can. I was not prepared for the level of hospitality and generosity I received from festival heads Don and Katha Cato last year, which included being invited to Don's birthday party last summer, which I totally did not expect. Guild-ed links

The Directors Guild award is one of the most important awards on the road to the Oscars, but this year, because of the large disparity between those nominees and the Oscar nominees for Best Director, it had become even more difficult to predict. Then Ben Affleck and Argo started winning everything, and now it looks like that streak could continue this weekend when the DGA winner is announced. Whoever wins here could have the inside track on Best Director at the Oscars, and even Best Picture, but even if ... read more »
